My daughter’s wedding announcement scared me right into Amity Crossfit. I had one year to become a ‘fit’ mother of the bride. The strikes against me; I was physically older, overweight, and living a sedentary lifestyle. Regardless of my limitations, I contacted Amity Crossfit and scheduled a free ‘try it out’ class. I was up front with Zack, the trainer; I wasn’t an athlete, I didn’t know any exercises, and I was clueless about the Crossfit world of work-outs & acronyms like WOD (workout of the day). One of their Yelp reviews mentioned Rob Wolf’’s The Paleo Solution diet. Immediately I switched to follow a Paleo diet. Since attending Amity Crossfit and changing my diet, I’ve gained many benefits; weight loss, increased physical strength & energy, confidence, inner joy, and a sense of community with other Crossfitters. My first workout, Zack told the group to run a 400 meter for warm-up. Inside my head I silently screamed I’M NOT A RUNNER! As I started running out of the building, Zack told the group “Make sure you bring her back”. When I came back from this run, I didn’t expect a great camaraderie to follow. Members of Amity Crossfit that I didn’t know cheered me on when I felt like I physically couldn’t go on anymore. The people are a diverse crowd of athletic skill and ages. Mostly stronger & younger than me, but it doesn’t matter. Inside I feel light years younger thanks to the challenging workouts I strive to complete. Unexpected is how much fun it is at Amity Crossfit. For me, every day there is a new adventure. I attend three times a week. Thank you Zack for your guidance and supportive encouragement. The wisest three words I heard the first day were-just show up! Zack scaled my workouts to my ability. In the beginning, I couldn’t do air squats, wall balls, and many of the other workouts. Now, 90 days later, I’m getting closer to my goal of being the ‘fit’ mother of the bride. Yikes, my daughter getting married called me a BAMF for doing back squats! If I can do this, anyone can. JUST SHOW UP!
I’ve been training at Amity CrossFit since November 2014 and I can honestly say that it has been a transformative experience for me. I do not consider myself athletic and, before joining Amity, most of my physical activity came from jogging and messing around with exercise machines every now and then. Also, I didn’t spend much time thinking about the food I ate (Ramen: the meal of choice for grad. students). After years of living like this, I was 5 pounds overweight and I felt lethargic and a bit dispirited.I joined Amity after hearing good things about CrossFit and, from the moment I set foot in the door, I knew I was in for something special. Zack and Sarah approach training with a level of enthusiasm that is infectious and encourages me to commit to my training. They have cultivated a supportive environment that places emphasis on safety (e.g. proper technique), hard work (e.g. scalable workouts that are challenging for everyone), and community (e.g. a month-long Paleo challenge). Also, I’m inspired by many of my classmates who are dedicated and passionate about their training but are also regular people that are kind, relatable, and unassuming. They make training a more worthwhile experience. After a year at Amity, I’m in the best shape of my life (I wanted to lose 5 pounds and instead I lost 25) and I feel stronger and more content. And I have discovered how much exercise and good nutrition can contribute to my health and well-being. No doubt about it: CrossFit is a significant investment of your time, money, and energy. But, if you’re looking to change things up like I did a year ago, I would suggest that you give Amity a shot. If you just show up and keep an open mind, then I’m confident that cool and fulfilling things will follow.
